Yusuf Abdullahi Ata as Minister of State for Housing and Urban Development is a decisive move that reflects his administration’s commitment to responsible governance and Nigeria’s housing sector revitalization. Ata’s appointment is more than a nod to Kano State’s critical role within Nigeria; it is a well-placed decision that signals hope for one of the country’s most populated and politically significant regions. As a respected leader from Fagge, Kano, Ata embodies the ideals of equitable representation and service, carrying the promise of meaningful advocacy for his people. Having grown up in Kano Central, Ata is intimately familiar with the unique challenges facing the area, and his track record speaks to his ability to address them effectively.
Ata’s impressive career spans education, public service, and politics. With a background in economics and a Master’s degree in Development Studies, Ata’s experience has equipped him with both the analytical and leadership skills necessary to address Nigeria’s housing needs. His tenure in the Kano State House of Assembly, where he served as Speaker, was marked by legislative accomplishments in healthcare, disability rights, and judicial reform. Ata’s legislative priorities have consistently demonstrated his commitment to empowering everyday citizens—a commitment now poised to benefit the country on a national scale through the Housing Ministry.
Significantly, key APC figures have commended this appointment as a clear statement of President Tinubu’s faith in Ata’s leadership. The support of Alhaji (Dr.) Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, the APC National Chairman and Kano’s former governor, along with that of respected Kano figures like his wife, the erudite Professor (Hajia) Hafsat Ganduje and the state APC chairman as well as the gubernatorial Candidate of the APC in Kano State in the last General Elections, Dr. Yusuf Gawuna underscores Ata’s widespread acceptance and popularity. This endorsement extends beyond party lines, as opposition party members from Kano in the National Assembly have also extended congratulations—further cementing Ata’s broad appeal and capacity to unify.
It is also gratifying to note that after the Supreme Court judgement which tilted the Gubernatorial position away from the APC earlier in the year, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political posters simply disappeared from the streets of Kano; but in the wake of the appointment of Rt. Hon. Abdullahi Ata, within days, the streets are now awash with the posters and billboards of the President everywhere reflecting the overwhelming joy of the people and the delight with which the appointment has restored confidence in the President.
Unfortunately, despite this overwhelming support, a small faction has raised objections rooted in political maneuvering rather than genuine concern for Kano’s future. They assert unfounded allegations of “anti-party activities,” disregarding Ata’s steadfast loyalty to the APC and the substantial contributions he has made to its cause. His critics’ fixation on perceived slights only emphasizes a misplaced agenda, driven by personal rather than public interest. As party members, we should prioritize unity and advancement, leaving behind factions that only seek to divide for personal gain.
Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata’s appointment is not only a boost for Kano but also a deliberate step toward strengthening Nigeria’s housing and urban development sectors. His background in housing policies and experience with Kano’s challenges will inform a targeted approach to President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda.” The APC administration has set ambitious housing goals, including building affordable Renewed Hope Cities and Estates, aimed at ensuring decent living standards across Nigeria. Ata’s knowledge and grassroots connection uniquely position him to lead these initiatives effectively and responsibly, benefitting communities nationwide.
With Ata in this role, Nigeria can expect an invigorated approach to housing that aligns with the APC’s broader objectives of economic growth and sustainable development. For Kano, this appointment ensures that the state remains a critical voice within the federal government, able to advocate for necessary infrastructural and social improvements. Beyond political gains, Ata’s leadership in this ministry will contribute to the overall vision of a Nigeria where citizens’ living conditions reflect dignity and access to opportunity.
This is not a time for detractors to detract from progress but a moment for all to rally behind a leader focused on positive change. President Tinubu’s wise decision to appoint Ata sends a message that governance is about inclusion, performance, and results, not fleeting personal ambitions. We commend this choice and look forward to the impact Ata’s commitment and expertise will undoubtedly bring to the APC, Kano, and all of Nigeria.
In the face of temporary opposition, one thing remains clear: the appointment of Rt. Hon. Yusuf Abdullahi Ata is a winning choice that will steer the housing sector toward growth, inclusivity, and real development, fulfilling the aspirations of Kano’s people and Nigerians at large.
