The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has reaffirmed its decision to proceed with a planned nationwide protest against the recent fuel price hike.
Henry Okuomo, the Senate President of NANS, made this clear on Friday, September 6, expressing the union’s dissatisfaction with the current economic challenges facing the country under the administration of President Bola Tinubu.
He emphasized that NANS is committed to holding the government accountable.
The protest, scheduled for Sunday, September 15, comes in response to the recent increase in fuel prices, which have surged to N855, N1,000, or higher per litre, depending on the location, at Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) stations.
During an interview on Channels TV, Okuomo stated, “We are not merely threatening a strike; we are taking action due to the current situation in the country.
Nigerians are experiencing severe hardship, and now the government has further increased fuel prices.”
He noted that the increase has had a significant impact on students, adding, “As student leaders, we have no choice but to stand up for the people.”
Okuomo further stressed NANS’ large presence, with over 40 million students across Nigeria, declaring, “We have resolved that on September 15, there’s no turning back. We will take to the streets in full force.”
