Throughout his illustrious career, he showcased his versatility in various blockbuster films, including Heat, in which he starred alongside Al Pacino, and The Doors, where he embodied the legendary Jim Morrison.
In 1995, Kilmer donned the cape and cowl as Batman in Batman Forever, joining the ranks of the iconic actors who brought Gotham’s vigilante to life.
While some controversy surrounded his on-set behaviour, many colleagues described him as a charismatic figure, deeply passionate about his craft.
Born Val Edward Kilmer on December 31, 1959, he made history as the youngest student ever admitted to Juilliard’s drama department.
Despite his aspirations for serious dramatic roles, he often found himself featured in major Hollywood productions.
After a period of taking on lesser-known films, Kilmer sought a comeback with a stage performance about Mark Twain, but his plans were derailed by his cancer diagnosis.
His struggles and legacy were poignantly chronicled in the 2021 documentary Val, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. The film depicted his rise to fame, personal trials, and remarkable resilience.
In 2022, Kilmer made a memorable appearance in Top Gun: Maverick, reprising his role as Iceman, with his real-life health issues intricately woven into the character.
Reflecting on his journey, Kilmer once wrote:
“For more than half a century, I have been honing my art—whether in literature, movies, poetry, painting, or music. I have truly lived a magical life.”
He leaves behind two children, Mercedes and Jack Kilmer.
