The Los Angeles County Fire Department said the plane – a Piper PA-32 – crashed around 11:10 a.m. PT at the In-N-Out Burger Pomona Dragstrip.
Three passengers were transported to local area hospitals with moderate to severe injuries.
The crash took place during the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) finals and racing was put on hold.
The aircraft – a fixed wing single engine with six seats – was attempting to land at Brackett Field Airport in La Verne, but crashed into a large RV and destroyed two large pickup trucks, reported Daily Bulletin.
‘The airplane struck several vehicles on the ground, but no bystanders were struck or injured,’ the Pomona Police Department said.
‘The pilot and three occupants of the airplane all suffered minor to moderate non-life-threatening injuries, and are being treated at a nearby hospital; no fatalities occurred as a result of this incident.’
It is unclear what caused the crash. Flight tracking data showed the aircraft took off from Apple Valley at 10:40 a.m. PST on Sunday.
The Federal Aviation Administration has been notified and investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the scene.
NHRA said the Top Fuel round was race was halted just as competitors were preparing to enter the first round, but they expect to resume at 1 p.m. PT.
‘We are investigating an apparent small plane crash near the dragstrip in Pomona while it was apparently attempting to land at nearby Brackett Field Airport on Sunday,’ NHRA said.
‘Our thoughts are with everyone involved in this incident. We are on extended hold. All race cars have returned to the pits for now, but the word is the event is expected to continue.’
Images shared on social media showed the entire roof of a white Ram pickup truck smashed in as fire crews sprayed down the scene.
