The appointment, to the chagrin of most people, was announced by the management of Abuja National Mosque.
South-East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON), hailed the appointment as a reflection of his dedication to Islamic scholarship and leadership.
It described the new Imam’s role as both a personal achievement and a divine responsibility to lead in worship and service to Allah.
Also, SEMON commended the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) for its inclusiveness under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
The organisation expressed hope that Usman’s appointment would uplift the Igbo Muslim community and foster unity within Nigeria’s broader Muslim population.
However, Prof. Usman will join two other active Imams, Prof. Ibrahim Makari and Prof. Muhammad Kabir, in leading the Juma’ah and daily prayers on a rotational basis.
