What sets golden blood apart is that it lacks antigens, meaning it has no positive or negative Rh factor. This makes it universal—golden blood can be transfused to anyone, adding to its immense value.

To date, only 43 individuals in the world are known to have golden blood. Despite its rarity, golden blood is no different in color from other types—it remains red. However, it uniquely lacks all 61 Rh antigens, earning it the designation of Rh-null, or Rh-zero.

While those with golden blood are considered perfect donors, their extreme rarity presents a challenge for transfusions, as finding compatible blood for them is exceedingly difficult.

For context, there are four primary blood groups—A, B, AB, and O—each of which can be either Rh-positive (Rh+) or Rh-negative (Rh-). Blood type and Rh factor are inherited from our parents, although it’s possible for a child to have a different blood type and Rh factor than either of their parents.
