Maiduguri Flood: People Still Trapped In DSS Quarters, 505 Housing State – NEMA

NEMA Director of Planning Research and Forecasting, Onimode Bandele, stated this on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’sMorning Brief, saying attempts are being made to get the people out.

“The latest report this morning is the people who leave around 505 and the DSS quarters are still trapped, so the effort is ongoing to get these people out,” he stated.

He said it is quite unfortunate that the incident in Maiduguri happened, but also commended the Federal Government for taking very quick decision same with the Borno State Government.

Bandele stated that relief materials were being provided by NEMA to victims ravaged by flood in the North-Eastern state.

He explained that there are claims that the flood that occurred exhumed some bodies from burial sites, but they cannot confirm that until water resides very well for them to be able to see if actual bodies were exhumed.

Bandele noted that the Borno State Government has mobilised trucks to get the people who are still stranded.

“Unfortunately, the people at the rooftop we have not been able to reach them but efforts are ongoing so that the search and rescue team with the support of the disaster response unit can get to those people and evacuate them to safety,” he said.

Since the wake of the devastating flood in Maiduguri, there have been four camps, but the tents provided for the victims have increased to nine.

NEMA, in conjunction with the Nigeria Air Force, have mobilised doctors to take care of the people.

“We are aware that drinking water is going to be a problem, NEMA has mobilized its own asset, we have water purification plants that have been mobilized to Maiduguri. This plants can provide drinking water within five minutes. No matter the source of water it has the capacity to process water that is safe and healthy for drinking,” Bandele added.
