The summit’s agenda includes discussions on deepening regional economic integration and addressing recent developments in the region.
Among the key topics is the withdrawal of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger from ECOWAS, following sanctions imposed after military coups in the three nations.
The session aims to evaluate these sanctions, balancing the bloc’s democratic principles with ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The leaders will also tackle pressing issues such as combating terrorism in the Sahel region and resolving political instability within member states. Additionally, discussions will focus on the timelines for countries under military rule to transition to civilian governance, with a push for expedited processes.
President Tinubu previously appointed Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye to mediate between ECOWAS and the governments of Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. President Faye’s findings are expected to be presented during this summit to guide the way forward.
