Jesutega Onokpasa, a prominent chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has threatened to withdraw his support for President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general elections if the current pattern of appointments in his administration continues. Onokpasa, who expressed his dissatisfaction on Monday during an interview with Arise News, criticized President Tinubu for appointing individuals who, according to him, have disrespected the party and its loyalists.
Onokpasa’s main grievance centers around the recent appointment of Daniel Bwala as a media aide to the president. Bwala, who had previously made disparaging remarks about Tinubu, including calling him a drug dealer without evidence, has become a symbol of the type of appointments that Onokpasa finds insulting. He argued that such appointments undermine the loyalty of party members who supported Tinubu’s presidential bid in 2023.
“The appointment of people who have insulted us is an insult,” Onokpasa remarked. “What is Mr. President trying to say? Is he trying to justify the statements made by these people? If this continues, I cannot support him in 2027.”
Onokpasa went on to express his frustration with the president’s approach, accusing Tinubu of disregarding the party’s loyalists. “We made you president, and you have to respect us. What is the logic in appointing Daniel Bwala? It feels like Mr. President is telling all of us, ‘to hell with you.’”
When pressed about whether he would leave the APC due to his discontent with the president’s actions, Onokpasa made it clear that he does not view President Tinubu as the sole owner of the party. “Tinubu doesn’t own the party. We all formed the party,” he said, indicating that his loyalty lies with the party rather than with any individual leader.
This threat marks a significant rift within the APC, as Onokpasa and others who share his sentiments may play a crucial role in determining the party’s fortunes in the upcoming election cycle. If the current trends in appointments continue, it remains to be seen whether the president can maintain the support of key party figures like Onokpasa.
