Joining millions in this year’s celebration, themed “For All Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment,” ZLP urged women to actively engage in politics and contribute to national development.
The party also emphasised the need to end discrimination and violence against women and girls, highlighting International Women’s Day as a global movement recognising women’s social, economic, cultural, and political achievements.
ZLP further stressed the importance of accelerating women’s rights, equality, and empowerment.
The party lamented that, 30 years after Nigeria subscribed to the Beijing Declaration in 1995, governments at all levels have yet to allocate the minimum 30 per cent of seats for women in elective and appointive positions.
“This delay has made the ongoing bill for special reserved seats for women in parliament even more urgent,” the party stated.
ZLP called on lawmakers to pass the bill this year, describing it as a major step forward in enhancing women’s political participation.
In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary, Khalid Arewa, ZLP’s National Woman Leader, Chinyere Oge-Kalu, urged immediate action.
“It is time to empower women and girls, end discrimination, and ensure inclusivity in governance,” she stated.
