Sheinbaum stated that Mexico has contingency plans in place should the tariffs be implemented.
Speaking at a morning press conference, the president said she would provide further details on Tuesday but emphasised that, regardless of the US decision, Mexico was prepared.
“We have a plan B, C, D,” Sheinbaum said, without elaborating on the specifics.
It should be recalled that Mexican officials met with their US counterparts in Washington last week to discuss trade and security policy, in an effort by Mexico to avert the tariffs.
Trump has accused Mexico and Canada of not doing enough to curb the flow of synthetic drugs, such as fentanyl, and to reduce migrant arrivals at their borders with the US. He has threatened sweeping tariffs if the countries fail to take stronger action on both issues.
Meanwhile, Sheinbaum described the meetings in Washington as cordial and stated that cooperation with the US had been very good so far.
