The hike was in retaliation for Ontario imposing a 25 per cent surcharge on electricity exports to America. Its Electricity System Operator was directed to implement the change.
Speaking on CNBC’s Money Movers, Ford said he would not “hesitate” to shut off electricity exports if Trump continued the trade war.

Ford added, “Is it a tool in our toolkit? 100 per cent, and as he continues to hurt Canadian families, I won’t hesitate to do that.”
President Trump condemned Ontario’s increase in electricity charges, which affects New York, Michigan, and Minnesota, impacting about 1.5 million customers.
Trump, posting on Truth Social, criticised Canada for “stooping” low to use electricity as a bargaining chip. “They will pay a financial price for this so big that it will be read about in history books,” he wrote.
