The dons cautioned against excessive usage of technology and AI, especially in scholarly writings.
The dons, among whom are the immediate past Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Idowu Olayinka, Professors Aina Adeogun, Francis Egbokhare and Josiah Ajiboye made these declarations in their separate presentations during an interdisciplinary discourse organised by the Postgraduate College in honor of a former Dean of the college, Professor Olabode Lukas
The lecture which was held on Tuesday was attended by the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Kayode Adebowale, who was represented by Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) Professor Peter Olapegba, Provost of the college, Professor Ayo Ogunjuyigbe and other principal officers of the institution.
Olayinka while speaking on the topic, “Integrating the past with the present for efficient administration of the university system”, said that the problem of poor funding in federal universities will continue to linger if the government fails not increase the budget allocation to education.
The professor of geology said that universities occupy a critical role in the scheme of things.
Adeogun who is a professor in the department of Zoology while speaking on the topic “Leveraging technology to transform postgraduate education in Nigeria” said that academics and students must use technology and AI responsibly.
“Technology and AI must be used with caution. AI cannot do everything. Technology cannot do everything. But, before we use technology, we must tackle the problem of power in Nigeria,” he said.
Egbokhare while speaking, said that academics and students should not put too much burden on technology and AI.
“There is a problem of overdependence on technology and AI. You have to use it in a way that it will not put too much burden on the end users,” he said.
Ajiboye who is a former Registrar of Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) said that everything has changed as a result of technology.
He advised lecturers and students to use technology and AI moderately.
“So, we should also address the issue of power. Technology and AI have brought significant changes but too much dependence is dangerous.
“Universities must focus on skills and competence. As we are introducing our children to technology, some countries are re-introducing books.
“Bring back our books because their children do not read anymore. It has its own negative side, we must do it with caution,” he advised.
