The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) has raised concerns over President Bola Tinubu’s recent appointments, accusing him of promoting sectionalism by favoring individuals from the South-West in key security positions......See Full Story>>.....See Full Story>>

The latest appointments of Adeola Ajayi as Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as Chief Justice of Nigeria have sparked criticism from the NEF, which argues that this continues a pattern of South-West dominance in critical roles.

Abdul-Azeez Suleiman, the NEF spokesperson, expressed disappointment, noting that previous appointments, including the Chief of Army Staff, Comptroller-General of Customs, and Inspector-General of Police, were also from the South-West. The NEF has warned that this perceived favoritism threatens national unity and could marginalize other regions.

The forum, which previously supported Tinubu in the 2023 General Elections, now regrets its decision, citing the President’s actions as divisive. NEF calls for a more inclusive approach to governance, emphasizing that continued regional favoritism could undermine Nigeria’s stability.

This sentiment has gained traction on social media, with many criticizing Tinubu’s appointment practices. The NEF has also hinted at supporting a more inclusive candidate in the 2027 elections, one who represents the interests of all regions of the country.

Suleiman emphasized the importance of reflecting Nigeria’s diversity in governance, warning that neglecting inclusivity could breed discontent and threaten the nation’s social fabric.

He called for appointing qualified individuals based on competence rather than regional affiliation, aligning with broader calls for transparency and meritocracy in government appointments.
