Boavista fullback Bruno Onyemaechi has called on the Confederation of African Football to create a new award and hand it to Libya following the Mediterranean Knights’ crafty display in Uyo on Friday, Soccernet reports......See Full Story>>.....See Full Story>>
Nigeria traded tackles with Libya at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo for their matchday three meeting of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifying series.
Ranked 39 on the FIFA ranking and boasting some of the continent’s finest players, the Super Eagles were the clear favourites to claim a home win over the 121-ranked Libya.
Knowing their limitations and buoyed by their coach’s objective of earning a draw in Uyo, Libya set out to frustrate the Super Eagles in the encounter.
Deploying several dark arts and underhand antics including a defend-first approach and time-wasting tactics, Libya kept Nigeria at bay for 86 minutes.
The Super Eagles eventually found a breakthrough when a Moses Simon cross found Fisayo Dele-Bashiru who expertly tucked home the game’s winning goal.
However, after watching Libya’s cunning antics prove successful for most of the clash against the Super Eagles, Nigeria international Onyemaechi is convinced that the North African Knights deserve special recognition.
And the Portugal-based defender has playfully urged CAF to hand Libya the notorious award for time wasting.
“Important 3 points. Omo caf suppose give them award on wasting time,” Onyemaecbi wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
The Super Eagles will next make the trip to Benghazi where they will again face Libya for the qualifier’s matchday four fixture.
Nigeria have now won each of their last five meetings with Libya.
