The police also recovered N1.3 million, believed to be ransom money, during the operation.
The pastor of the church was shot and is still receiving treatment in the hospital, while the victims, members of Elyon Paradise Ministry, Ogwashi-Uku, were abducted during a night vigil in their church.
Acting swiftly, the Commissioner of Police, Olufemi Abaniwonda, deployed tactical teams, including the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber Crime Squad, to ensure safe rescue.
Police operatives, in collaboration with the Ubuluku community vigilante and concerned residents, stormed the kidnappers’ camp, where the suspects opened fire on the officers but fled, abandoning the five victims. The hostages were rescued unharmed and reunited with their families.
SP Bright Edafe, the Delta State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed that security operatives recovered 13 expended cartridges along with the money.
He assured that a manhunt for the fleeing suspects is ongoing.
According to him, Commissioner of Police Abaniwonda commended the bravery of the police officers and the support of Ubuluku community members, including human rights activists who assisted in the operation.
