This was the major focus at the organisational session of the UN 2026 Water Conference.
Dr. Prince Ero Ibhafidon, President of Waterlight Save Initiative appealed for urgent need to safeguard lives through the provision of water.
His appeal was both urgent and uncompromising. According to him, the United Nations and global stakeholders must establish a Global Water Security Fund to fast-track climate-resilient water infrastructure.
He said, for many, the statistics are overwhelming but distant as one in three people lack access to safe drinking water, “ every two minutes, a child dies from a waterborne disease. Yet, for those living this reality, it is a daily fight for survival,”he said.
“This is not just a crisis,” Dr. Ibhafidon stressed.
“It is a failure of leadership.”
He urged the UN to move beyond pledges and enforce accountability for Sustainable Development Goal 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation for All).
This, he argued, requires setting clear progress benchmarks to hold nations responsible while expanding access to water innovation for vulnerable communities.
“The time for pledges has passed. Now, we must deliver results,” he said.
Dr. Ibhafidon left the audience with a question that will define this era, by stating that, “Years from now, will we be remembered as the generation that ended water scarcity—or the one that let millions suffer in silence?”
