Speaking at the unveiling ceremony attended by presidents and secretaries of various sports federations, Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the NSC, explained the importance of collaboration between the NSC and the federations to drive growth and sustainability.
Dikko outlined a three-point strategy to overhaul Nigerian sports: Reset, Refocus, and Relaunch.
“The reason for this meeting is to introduce ourselves and share our vision for taking Nigerian sports to the next level, in line with the mandate we’ve been given by Mr. President,” Dikko said.
He spoke on the need for federations and the commission to work together as partners, sharing a common goal and the importance of unity in achieving the shared objectives.
“The success of the federations, who are like our operational arms, is our success. If you succeed, we succeed. If we fail, we fail,” the Chairman added.
While discussing the NSC’s broader vision, Dikko explained, “We are working for the same purpose. Our destiny is tied together, and we must work as one to achieve the ultimate goal.”
Adding his voice, the Director-General of the NSC, Bukola Olopade, outlined additional plans to improve Nigeria’s sports landscape, including a focus on athlete development and governance restructuring.
He revealed the introduction of a corporate governance structure and the appointment of marketing-driven Chief Operating Officers (COOs) within sports federations.
Recognizing the potential of the rapidly growing sector, he revealed that out of the 46 million Nigerians, over 38 million young boys and girls keep themselves engaged in E-sport .
“This is a sport that has been ignored for too long. I want to thank the NOC for approving the E-sports federation,” Olopade said, noting that the sector would offer significant economic opportunities.
“We’re tapping into the billions of dollars involved in E-sports to empower young Nigerians and provide them with opportunities in this emerging field.”
The new plans, combined with the recognition of E-sports as a formal federation, signal a bold step towards making Nigeria’s sports sector a key player in both local and international markets.
The NSC’s renewed focus on sustainability and growth aims to turn sports into a cornerstone of the nation’s economy, providing opportunities for athletes, youth, and industries alike.
