WorldGBC is a global network of over 80 Green Building Councils – including the Egypt Green Building Council, the Green Building Council of South Africa, and the Green Building Council Nigeria in Africa – committed to advancing sustainability in the built environment. It categorizes its members into three levels – Prospective, Emerging, and Established – based on their market impact and industry leadership. GBCN’s elevation to Emerging status reflects its growing influence and commitment to transforming Nigeria’s built environment.
As an Emerging Member, GBCN is now positioned to play a stronger role in regional and global green building efforts, ensuring Nigeria’s voice is well represented in key sustainability conversations.
Commenting on this achievement, Danjuma Waniko, President of GBCN, stated, “This achievement is more than just a milestone; it is a strategic step toward scaling our impact and accelerating the sustainable transformation of Nigeria’s built environment. With this recognition, we are now better positioned to expand our influence, drive market transformation, and strengthen industry leadership. The work ahead is critical, and we invite all stakeholders to join us in shaping a more sustainable and resilient future for Nigeria.

“Achieving Emerging status affords GBCN the advantage of playing a more active role in advocating for green building adoption in Nigeria, reinforcing its credibility as a key player in Nigeria’s sustainability movement, bringing increased visibility to its work across the global green building ecosystem” he said.
Cristina Gamboa, CEO of the World Green Building Council, commended GBCN’s efforts saying: “We are impressed by the dedication of GBC Nigeria and are confident that the organization will continue to lead the industry, educate the market, and act as a primary source of knowledge and collective action. We look forward to collaborating on ongoing projects that will shape a more sustainable built environment.”

GBCN’s journey to Emerging Member status is made possible with the support of key partners and stakeholders, and the organization extends its deepest appreciation to these organizations, including the International Finance Corporation (IFC), Kohler Africa, Mixta Africa, and Nairda Limited—for their dedication to advancing sustainable development in Nigeria.
Additionally, GBCN expresses its gratitude to the World Green Building Council and the WorldGBC Africa Regional Network for their steadfast support, which has been invaluable in expanding the organization’s reach and accelerating its mission. The contributions of GBCN’s dedicated staff, volunteers, members, and the broader green building community have been fundamental in achieving this recognition.
With Emerging Member status now secured, GBCN is poised to further expand its operations over the next 12 to 24 months. Key priorities include growing membership, hosting industry events, developing educational programs, exploring certification systems, and strengthening influence within Nigeria. Meeting these milestones will enable GBCN to progress toward the highest level of membership—Established status—where it will gain full WorldGBC benefits and leadership opportunities.
Through its participation in global initiatives such as World Green Building Week and the Building the Transition program, GBCN continues to drive positive change in Nigeria and contribute to international efforts toward a sustainable future.
