Contrary to speculation, the police command has debunked claims that the officer responsible was under the influence of alcohol.
The incident occurred on March 10, 2025, at approximately 3 a.m.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, stated that officers from the Maitumbi Division responded to a distress call about youths causing unrest in the area on Monday at 3 a.m.
However, he disclosed that the team was attacked with stones, and in an attempt to disperse the crowd, one of the patrol team members fired gunshots, hitting Sani Khalid in the stomach.
Abiodun further revealed that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maitumbi has been directed to investigate and identify the personnel responsible for the alleged shooting.
However, locals described Sani as peaceful, kind, and law-abiding, with no ties to criminal organizations.
“He was a good person,” they said.
