Natasha: PDP demands open investigation into sexual harassment allegation

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly criticized the suspension of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan from the Senate, describing the decision as a deliberate attempt to suppress allegations of sexual harassment leveled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio.......CONTINUE READING THE ARTICLE FROM THE SOURCE>>>>>
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, the PDP argued that the swift suspension of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan without a transparent investigation undermines the principle of fair hearing and tarnishes the integrity of the Senate.
“The hasty suspension not only negates parliamentary conventions but also portrays the Senate as an institution that condones and shields misconduct,” the statement read.
The opposition party also contended that the six-month suspension effectively deprives the people of Kogi Central Senatorial District of their constitutional right to representation in the Senate.
The PDP further described the move as an abuse of power, especially given that Senator Akpabio remains in office while being the subject of the allegation.
The party recalled a similar allegation against Akpabio by Dr. Joi Nunieh, the former acting Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), arguing that his refusal to step aside raises questions about his credibility.
“If Senator Akpabio has nothing to hide, he should submit himself to an open and unbiased investigation in line with parliamentary practice,” the PDP stated.
Beyond the sexual harassment claims, the PDP also pointed to other allegations against the Senate President, including ongoing corruption investigations into his tenure as Governor of Akwa Ibom State and as Minister of Niger Delta Affairs.
The party accused the current Senate leadership of being embroiled in multiple controversies, which it said have weakened the legislative body’s role in holding the executive accountable.
With protests already erupting over the matter, the PDP urged the Senate to reinstate Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan and conduct a fair investigation into her claims to uphold its credibility.
