DAILY POST reported that ‘Akpabio Must Go’ protests erupted at the National Assembly and parts of the Federal Capital Territory on Wednesday as Natasha’s supporters called on the Senate President to step down, pending investigations into the accusation of sexual harassment levelled against him.
The protesters who arrived at the National Assembly gate as early as 8:00 am on Wednesday, carried banners with inscriptions such as ‘Akpabio Must Go’, and ‘Protect Women’s Rights’. They demanded accountability and urged the Senate to investigate Akpabio over the accusations.
Following Natasha’s suspension by the Senate on Thursday, there have also been calls from several quarters for Akpabio’s impeachment as Senate President.
However, the Ijaw Youths Network, in a statement signed by the President and the Secretary, Frank Ebikabo and Federal Ebiaridor, respectively, insisted that the Senate President has not committed any offense to warrant his impeachment.
The Ijaw youths described the calls for Akpabio’s removal as sponsored, saying that some paid agents and vested interests are working round the clock to ignite instability in the Senate.
Insisting that Akpabio will not be the victim of a lynch mob, the group said, “We are constrained to vehemently condemn the unnecessary calls for the impeachment of the Senate President by paid agents motivated by interests other than patriotism.
“A willful attempt to foment instability in the Senate cannot be the right way to approach any controversy. We are against it.”
Declaring that they have confidence in Akpabio’s ability to continue leading the Senate, the IYN called for transparency and objectivity in the handling of the matter.
“Nigerians not to be deceived into believing the conspiracy, and the allegations against Akpabio even before the matter was resolved,” the IYN said while urging Akpabio to be resolute and focused on his responsibilities to the country.
“The Ijaw Youths Network (IYN) has observed with keen interest the raging drama involving the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.
“At this point, transparency and objectivity should be the watchword in resolving the burning issue distracting the Senate.
“While we believe that the issue should be transparently handled in the National Assembly, we are worried about the apparent conspiracy and the lynch mob crying murder against the Senate President.
“While we are not prejudging the ongoing investigation, we make bold to state our deep reservations over the claim that the Senate President took Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to his residence like one school child to show her his house, to convince her to have good time with him in his country home.
“We know that as Senate President, Akpabio has access to any Senator and does not need to make such a move in the presence of Natasha’s husband who happens to be his friend.
“We urge Nigerians to avoid vilification of the Senate President even before the conclusion of the ongoing investigation.
“We have confidence in his ability to make the right legislative decisions in the interest of the Niger Delta and indeed Nigeria,” the statement added.
