Following the attacks, the Kebbi State Government directed the local community to find and eliminate the wild animal. Governor Nasir Idris issued the directive through the Emir of Yauri, HRH Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi.
Alhaji Nasiru Sarki Mayanan Gungun confirmed the incident in a telephone interview. “A group of fishermen and farmers, armed with bows and arrows, successfully killed the hippopotamus on Monday,” he said.
The group first killed the smaller hippopotamus at 11 am and later killed the larger one at 3 pm. Afterward, they transported the carcass to the palace of the District Head of Gungu, Alhaji Kasimu Aliyu, where it was butchered and shared among the people.
The community has expressed relief and gratitude to Governor Idris and Emir Dr. Muhammad Zayyanu Abdullahi for their prompt action.
