Potter also suggested that his team defeated Arsenal 1-0 at the Emirates Stadium because his players were “tactically very disciplined and very good overall” against Mikel Arteta’s side.
Jarrod Bowen’s first-half goal gave Potter’s men the victory over the Gunners at the Emirates Stadium.
“Because of what happened against Leicester – Merino coming on and scoring two – we guessed he would start the game,” Potter said during his post-match press conference.
“If you look at how he attacks the box and what he does, he’s incredible at getting on the shoulder of defenders and timing his runs into the box.
“He’s very dangerous, and then you’ve got the quality on the wings and [Martin] Ødegaard putting balls in from all angles. We had to defend that situation well, and I thought we did it as well as we could.”
Potter added: “Massive performance for us.
“I’m delighted for the players and the fans. Tactically very disciplined performance. Really good overall.”
The result leaves West Ham in 16th position on the Premier League table with 30 points from 26 games.
The Hammers will now take on Leicester City in their next Premier League tie on Thursday.
