Okupe addressed his critics, saying, “Those who think my support for Tinubu is driven by personal motives simply don’t understand. Many of them are young and unaware of my background. I’ve always stood for what I believe to be fair and just, even if it doesn’t benefit me personally.”

Reflecting on his long history with Tinubu, Okupe recounted that their relationship dates back to their involvement in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), a pro-democracy group from the 1990s. Although their political paths have differed, Okupe highlighted the mutual respect and understanding between them, forged over years of political involvement. “I met with President Tinubu about a week ago,” Okupe shared. “It had been seven or eight years since we last saw or spoke. Yet, despite never being on the same side politically, our shared experiences have kept us connected.”

Okupe expressed admiration for Tinubu’s qualities as both a politician and a technocrat, noting his capacity for strategic thinking and deep understanding of developmental policies. He compared Tinubu’s leadership style to that of the late Obafemi Awolowo, Nigeria’s revered political figure, lauding both leaders as reformers dedicated to public welfare. “Awolowo had innovative ideas aimed at uplifting the masses, and Tinubu embodies that same commitment. His approach to governance reflects a genuine desire to reform.”

In response to claims that Tinubu took office without a clear plan, Okupe dismissed these as baseless criticisms. “Saying Tinubu came unprepared is complete nonsense. I have worked closely with two past presidents and studied others; there’s no Nigerian leader from 1960 to now who has entered office better equipped for governance than Tinubu,” he asserted.

Okupe concluded by highlighting his confidence in Tinubu’s reformative capabilities, expressing optimism for his presidency and suggesting that, like Awolowo, Tinubu’s leadership will be remembered for its focus on transformative policies.
