Speaking in Lafia on Friday during a plenary session on fisheries and aquaculture challenges, the governor described the issue as pressing.

The session was part of preparations for the second edition of the state’s fishing festival, set to take place on Saturday in Feferruwa, Assakio Development Area.

Sule, represented by his Special Adviser on Special Duties (Agriculture), Muhammad Iyimoga-Oyigye, reaffirmed the government’s resolve to support fishermen and women, ensuring the sector thrives.

As part of proactive measures, he highlighted the recent distribution of 25,000 Heterotis fish fingerlings to fishing communities in Doma Local Government Area to boost fish production.

“Our administration is deeply committed to food security, and fish availability is a crucial aspect of that. We will take all necessary steps to ensure that fish is accessible and affordable for residents across the state,” Sule stated.

He emphasized the significance of the upcoming fishing festival, noting that beyond being a cultural event, it serves as a platform to promote aquaculture and drive economic growth in the sector.

In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the state Ministry of Agriculture, Umaru Abdullahi, acknowledged the persistent concerns over fish scarcity and praised the governor’s recent interventions. He expressed optimism that continued government support would alleviate the difficulties faced by local fish farmers.

Experts from the fisheries departments of the University of Abuja and Nasarawa State University, Keffi, also addressed attendees, advising aspiring fish farmers to seek professional guidance to minimize losses.
