The XEC variant, first detected in Australia, has demonstrated a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising public health concerns. This development was highlighted in a letter dated December 5, addressed to the Committee of Chief Medical Directors and Medical Directors by Dr. O.N. Anuma, Permanent Secretary and Head of the Teaching Hospital Division.
The letter, made available to media outlets on Saturday, stated, “I am directed to inform you of a newly detected XEC COVID-19 variant which has been reported in Australia and has already spread to 29 countries globally. You may wish to know that this variant has shown a growth advantage over other circulating strains, raising concerns about its potential impact on public health.”
Dr. Anuma emphasized the need for immediate vigilance, urging hospitals to activate alert systems and maintain a high index of suspicion for patients presenting with COVID-like symptoms.
Call for Collaboration and Monitoring
The directive underscored the importance of collaboration between health institutions and the Federal Ministry of Health to ensure an effective response. Dr. Anuma called for enhanced monitoring protocols and timely sharing of data concerning the XEC variant.
“We request your committee to collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to share critical data regarding this strain and implement enhanced monitoring protocols,” he stated. “Timely information sharing among relevant stakeholders, including the Federal Ministry of Health, will be vital for effective response strategies.”
Global Spread and Concerns
The XEC variant has been identified in 29 countries, including the United States, France, Germany, Denmark, and the United Kingdom. In September, PUNCH Healthwise reported that XEC had infected over 600 people across 27 countries, with mutations that may increase its transmissibility. However, vaccines are still expected to provide protection against severe illness.
Medical experts have been urged to enhance their preparedness as the variant continues to spread globally, ensuring proactive measures are in place to safeguard public health.
The Federal Government’s alert comes as a reminder of the evolving nature of the COVID-19 virus and the need for sustained vigilance and preparedness in combating new variants.
