He also said that good governance would be possible if only the constitution allows it.
Anyaoku made the call during the 14th edition of Emeka Anyaoku Lecture Series on Good Governance with the theme: ‘Imperative of Good Governance In Nigeria’ hosted by Peter Mbah, Enugu State governor at the International Conference Centre, ICC, Enugu.
Anyaoku further supported the idea to restructure the country’s system of governance, and described Nigeria as a country not a nation as it has remained pluralistic.
While describing Mbah as a quiet and truly performing governor, the elder statesman said that he was genuinely transforming Enugu, hitherto known as a civil service city, into a hub for Industrial, educational and agricultural innovation, with little publicity.
Peter Mbah in his remarks described Anyaoku as an inspirational figure and one of Nigeria’s best gifts to the world, adding that good governance is a subject he always found quite fascinating.
Mbah noted that good leadership proceeds from the understanding that the people should be the centrepiece of state policies and projects, both political and economic imperative.
Ibrahim Gambari, immediate past Chief of Staff to former President Muhammadu Buhari, who was the keynote speaker, provided profound insights into governance reforms and the pathways to sustainable national progress, saying that the crisis of governance and leadership playing out around the world has been a source of intense and multiple discussions from gatherings of international communities and business leaderships, meetings of Diplomats, Scholars and Civil Society in diaspora.
