The teachers were identified during a verification exercise conducted by the Zamfara State Ministry of Education, Science, and Technology to assess the presence of genuine staff in secondary schools. Commissioner for Education, Malam Wadatau Madawaki, disclosed this to journalists, stating that the committee discovered 207 teachers who had been neglecting their duties.

“At the end of the exercise, the committee found that some teachers were completely absent from their classrooms, while others only showed up for a few days a week. Some were even working in multiple places while still collecting salaries,” Madawaki said.

Following these findings, the state government directed the Ministry of Finance to suspend the salaries of the affected teachers for three months. However, some of them took to social media to criticize the government’s decision, claiming it was unfair.
Realizing their mistakes, the teachers later mobilized themselves and formally apologized to both the ministry and Governor Dauda Lawal. “They came to the ministry today and submitted written apologies, pleading for leniency,” the commissioner stated.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Nafisa Isah and Malam Abubakar admitted their wrongdoing and appealed for forgiveness. “We acknowledge our mistakes and deeply regret our actions. We trust the leadership of Governor Dauda Lawal and Commissioner Madawaki and hope for a favorable resolution,” they said.

Madawaki assured that the apology letters would be forwarded to the governor while urging the teachers to uphold their professional responsibilities. The government is yet to decide on whether their salaries will be reinstated.
