The goal is to secure their support for the League’s activities to address key challenges in Northern Nigeria.
The decision to embark on these consultations was made during a special meeting at the Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, chaired by Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, former Governor of Kano State.
The Northern Democrats, a political movement representing the region, emphasized the urgency of addressing Northern unity, security, and leadership, which continue to pose significant challenges.
According to a source, “The North needs someone who can help resolve the issues that have persisted through previous administrations, especially the insecurity that threatens the very fabric of the nation, particularly in the North.
The region also requires a unifying figure to help present a united front. This is one of the key objectives of the upcoming Kaduna Summit.”
The League has scheduled the Northern Nigerian Summit for November in Kaduna and established a Standing Steering Committee and five subcommittees to facilitate the process.
A statement released after the meeting outlined two primary goals for the summit:
- To serve as a platform to strengthen Northern unity, security, and leadership.
- To offer viable Northern solutions to the region’s challenges, specifically disunity, insecurity, and poverty.
The statement, signed by LND Convener Umar Ardo and Secretary Hon. Emmanuel Jime, also detailed the committees and their leadership. Senator Ibrahim Ida chairs the Standing Steering Committee, with Rt. Hon. Ibrahim Bio from Kwara State serves as Deputy Chairman.
The subcommittees include:
- Contact and Mobilization, chaired by Dr. Ja’afar Bello Dambazau (Kano State)
- Programs Planning & Logistics, chaired by Alhaji Danjuma Ibrahim (Sokoto State)
- Media & Publicity, chaired by Dr. Ladan Salihu (Bauchi State)
- Intelligence & Security, chaired by AVM Monday Morgan (Benue State)
- Events and Protocol, chaired by Ambassador Mohammed Hassan (Borno State)
The group also confirmed Malam Ibrahim Shekarau as its substantive chairman and Hon. Emmanuel Jime as substantive secretary. The LND’s efforts focus on fostering unity and security in the North while offering solutions to its most pressing issues.
