Abejide, who spoke at the 10th anniversary of the Association of Yoruba Traditional Leaders and Obas in the Northern States and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in Abuja over the weekend, called on the Yoruba leaders to eschew divisive politics.
The ceremony also witnessed the inauguration of the new executive committee of the association.
He stressed the need for unity among Yorubas in the region, arguing that the Yoruba nation stood a better chance in unity and harmony.
Abejide, who is also the Asiwaju of Yorubas in Kano, also emphasised the strategic importance of Yoruba unity, noting that, “Yorubas form a significant part of Nigeria’s population.
“If we are removed from the equation, the gap will be deeply felt. That’s why we must remain united.”
Abejide, who is a lawmaker representing Yagba Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, also chairs
House Committee on Customs and Excise, promised to support the advancement of the association.
“I’ll support you, but only if we work together to support the President. Many of you are excelling in your fields and earning respect across communities. That influence must be channelled appropriately.”
He recounted how his constituents stood by him during his second-term bid in the House of Representatives and were now seeing the benefits, saying, “Tomorrow (Sunday), I am flagging off a 57.2-kilometer road project. This is not due to my personal strength but strong backing.
“If we work together, this association will experience real transformation.”
He announced a major project for the Yoruba community in Kano: “We are building a state-of-the-art palace. This is about more than just a structure; it is about ensuring the welfare of our people and strengthening our influence.
Earlier, the guest speaker, Prof Oluranti Ojo from the University of Abuja, urged Yoruba traditional rulers to be good ambassadors of the Yoruba region.
“You represent the Obas of Yoruba land outside the region, as they cannot be everywhere at all times. Your leadership must reflect the values and unity of our people”, he said.
Oba Jimoh Alao Yusuf, Oba Yoruba of Gombe and the Secretary General of the Association, underscored the importance of law-abiding citizenship, particularly as the 2027 elections approached.
Also, the Iyalaje Yoruba, Kano,
Hajia Idayat Bolanle, urged the new executive committee to promote inclusivity, especially for Yoruba women in the north.
