We often make this mistake of thinking that a certain person is HIV negative just because he or she looks perfectly healthy, don’t make that mistake. Some people will look healthy even if they have been living with HIV for years.

Here are three reasons why a person can be HIV positive but not get sick because of it.

1. Living a healthy lifestyle

Living a healthy lifestyle also includes eating healthy.

“Healthy eating is good for your overall health. Following a healthy diet offers several benefits:

Provides the energy and nutrients your body needs to fight HIV and other infections. Maintains a healthy weight. Manages HIV symptoms and complications. Improves absorption of medicines and helps manage potential side effects.”

2. Clinical Latency

“In this stage, the virus still multiplies, but at very low levels. People in this stage may not feel sick or have any symptoms. This stage is also called chronic HIV infection.

Without HIV treatment, people can stay in this stage for 10 or 15 years, but some move through this stage faster.”

3. Not defaulting on HIV treatment

“If you take HIV medicine exactly as prescribed and get and keep an undetectable viral load, you can live a long and healthy life and will not transmit HIV to your HIV-negative partners.”

If your viral load becomes undetectable you become more or less the same as an HIV negative person because you won’t be able to transmit HIV to other people. Don’t stop taking treatment even if your viral load has become undetectable.
