Southern Kaduna has once again been plunged into turmoil following a wave of fresh attacks and abductions across multiple communities in the region. Senator Sunday Katung, who represents Kaduna South, has raised alarm over the escalating violence, urging swift action from both the government and security agencies.
According to the senator, the latest attacks have targeted communities in Kauru, Kachia, Zangon Kataf, Kaura, and Sanga Local Government Areas (LGAs). Southern Kaduna has been a hotspot for violent clashes, with persistent conflicts between farmers and herders leading to widespread loss of life and displacement.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Katung disclosed that 22 individuals, including women and children, were recently abducted in the Kugauta community of Kaura LGA. The senator condemned the unrelenting attacks, describing them as acts of terror against innocent civilians.
“I am deeply worried by the renewed attacks, killings, and kidnappings in some of our communities across Kaduna South Senatorial District by terrorists. These atrocities against our people must not continue unchecked—it must stop now,” Katung stated.
The senator emphasized the government’s constitutional duty to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens, citing Section 14(2)(b) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. He assured residents that security remains a top priority in his legislative agenda.
In response to the crisis, Katung revealed that he is actively working with the Kaduna State Government and the Chief of Defence Staff to establish a Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kauru LGA and other vulnerable areas. This move, he believes, will enhance military presence and improve security responses to ongoing attacks.
“I will continue to do whatever is necessary to secure the lives of our people,” he affirmed, while also commending security personnel for their relentless efforts in combating criminal elements in the region.
The senator further urged affected communities to collaborate with security agencies by providing critical intelligence that could lead to the apprehension of perpetrators and their informants.
