CAF had its 2024 awards earlier today in Marrakech Morocco, with some individuals retaining their crown from last year; and new ones emerging.
First, Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman, emerged as the 2024 CAF Player Of The Year (POTY). The Nigerian winger had an outstanding year with both club and scoring. Helping Nigeria to its first ever AFCON final in a decade.
Also, he was instrumental for his club Atalanta BC; helping the Italian outfit to win it’s first European silverware when he scores a hat-trick in the final to end Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run.
The announcement did not come as a surprise to many Nigerians, despite earlier speculations that Achraf Hakimi of Morocco will win the award.
Second, Super Falcons goalkeeper, Chiamaka Nnadozie was crowned CAF best goalkeeper for 2024. It’s her second consecutive plaque after winning it in 2023.
The Paris FC feminine shot-stopper was outstanding for the Super Falcons of Nigeria helping them qualify for the next edition of WAFCON.
Third, outstanding Nigerian goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali surprisingly did not make the CAF 2024 starting XI. The Chippa United goalie was instrumental for the Super Eagles of Nigeria at the last AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire. Keeping three clean-sheets. Fans of the former Enyimba goalie, were outraged and took on various social media platforms to air their anger.
Fourth, 2023 AFCON Most Valuable Player MVP, William Troost-Ekong
shockingly failed to make CAF 2024 Starting XI. The decision to exclude the former Watford FC man from fgw squad has got many football journalists and pundits worried.
It was a sad evening for Nigerians, who hoped the Super Eagles Captain will make the list.
Finally, the Super Falcons of Nigeria for the second consecutive time scooped the the award for the best female team in Africa for 2024.
The nine-time African champions, since qualified for the next edition of the WAFCON; and was also Outstanding at the 2024 summer Olympics in Paris.
It’s a winning evening for Nigeria football.
