The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied extending an invitation to former President Goodluck Jonathan to run for the presidency on its platform in the 2027 election. Despite speculation fueled by recent remarks from Ibrahim Abdullahi, the PDP’s deputy spokesperson, the party insists no ticket has been offered to Jonathan......Read The Full Article>>.....Read The Full Article>>
Speaking with BBC Hausa, Abdullahi clarified that his comments on Jonathan’s eligibility were misinterpreted. “The report that PDP has issued its presidential ticket to former President Goodluck Jonathan or invited him to contest the 2027 presidential election is not true,” he stated.
Abdullahi explained that during an interview, a journalist asked about Jonathan’s potential candidacy. He responded by affirming Jonathan’s legal eligibility, citing the constitution, which allows him one more term in office. However, Abdullahi emphasized that eligibility does not equate to an invitation or endorsement.
“The PDP has many eligible candidates capable of leading the country,” Abdullahi added, stressing that the party’s ticket would be awarded to someone who officially declares their interest in running.
Jonathan, who previously ran under the PDP banner, lost the 2015 presidential election to Muhammadu Buhari. Since then, his political future has been the subject of widespread debate.
This development raises questions about PDP’s strategy for 2027. While the party acknowledges Jonathan’s qualifications, it appears hesitant to rally behind him. Is this a sign of internal shifts within the PDP, or a calculated move to gauge public sentiment before making any decisions?
The larger issue remains: will the PDP capitalize on its legacy candidates like Jonathan, or will it opt for fresh faces to challenge the ruling party’s grip on power? In an era of shifting political loyalties, PDP’s approach could shape Nigeria’s democratic landscape leading up to 2027.
