The jets, procured through SOFEMA, a French military and aeronautics company, are ready for shipping, as confirmed by Dada on December 5, 2024. This addition will enhance the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), which currently operates 11 Alpha Jets.
The Alpha Jet, a product of collaboration between France and Germany, is a versatile light attack and trainer aircraft, capable of carrying a variety of weapons including bombs, rockets, and missiles. The aircraft is also equipped with a gun pod for close air support operations, making it a valuable asset for military operations.
Additionally, Nigeria is expecting the delivery of 24 M-346FA light attack aircraft, which were ordered under the previous administration. The first batch is expected to arrive early in 2025. Chief of Air Staff, Hasan Abubakar, emphasized that these acquisitions are part of a broader effort to modernize the NAF fleet and improve operational capabilities with President Tinubu’s support.
The announcement of these acquisitions follows President Tinubu’s state visit to France in late November 2024, during which defense cooperation was one of the key topics discussed. As part of the modernization plan, a maintenance hub is also expected to be established in Nigeria to ensure long-term operational support for the new fleet.
