Leading Islamic scholar Alfa Aribidesi of At-Tawdeeh Islamic Da’awah broke the announcement of the cleric’s passing on Friday morning.
Bello, who was born in Ibadan, Oyo State, in 1940, was renowned for his extensive knowledge and influential Islamic teachings.
Famous Islamic singer Alhaji Basit Olarenwaju, also known by his stage as Aponle Anabi, posted an emotional message on his official Facebook page expressing his sorrow over the loss.
Corroborating the report, Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State also expressed shock and profound sadness over Bello’s passing.
In a statement signed by his Chief Press secretary, Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor condoled with the people and government of Oyo state, the Ansar-Ud-Deen family worldwide, and the Muslim community.
“The fiery preacher stayed in the national limelight for over four decades as a consistent advocate of Islamic monotheism, piety, civic virtue, and responsible leadership and followership,” the statement reads.
“He kept his honour as a disciplined scholar with mass appeals across social strata.
“He spoke truth to power in a nuanced way that respects sensibilities in equal measures the death of Sheikh Ajani Bello is, indeed, a national loss.
“We ask Allah to ease his accounts, grant him al-Jannah Firdaus, and uphold his family upon the goodness and his fine legacies.”
Bello’s public speaking career started at the startlingly young age of ten. He was raised in a pious Islamic household and was taught the lessons of the Quran by his parents from an early age.
Because of his insatiable curiosity, he moved in with his uncle when he was nine years old and went to both a regular and an Islamic school in Ibadan.
