The bill, sponsored by Deputy Speaker, Dumle Maol, Lolo Opuende, and Sylvanus Nwankwo, seeks to repeal the Commissions of Inquiry Law, CAP 30, Laws of Rivers State, 1999, and re-enact the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Law.
Presenting the bill, Maol explained that the legislation has its roots in the colonial era, specifically the old Eastern Nigeria.
He emphasised that the bill aimed to provide a legal framework for the holding of Commissions of Inquiry in the state.
“The essence of the Bill is to repeal the Commissions of Inquiry Law, CAP 30, Laws of Rivers State, 1999, and to re-enact the Rivers State Commissions of Inquiry Law for the holding of Commissions of Inquiry, and for other matters connected thereto,” Maol said.
The Speaker, Amaewhule, however, urged members to thoroughly study the Bill and prepare for a robust debate at the next legislative sitting.
