The decision was reached during a meeting of the PDP Governors’ Forum held in Akure, Ondo State, on Tuesday.
Sources privy to the details of the meeting revealed that the governors were concerned about the factionalisation of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and resolved to unite for the preservation of the party. The meeting, which was convened before the official flag-off of the PDP governorship campaign rally in Ondo State, was attended by the acting chairman, Damagum, and Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), among other party chieftains.
During a virtual meeting held on Monday, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State expressed disappointment over how the crisis had led to the factionalisation of the NWC, expressing fears that it could negatively impact his bid for a second term in 2026. Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, who had initially opposed Damagum’s removal, reportedly changed his stance and now favors a chairman emerging from the North-Central, in line with the party’s constitution.
The governors agreed that Damagum would continue as acting chairman until the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for October 24, where the North-Central’s nomination for the position would be ratified. The meeting also resolved to impress on members to withdraw all pending court cases related to the party’s national leadership crisis.
In a communiqué issued by the PDP Governors’ Forum, the governors reiterated that there are no factions in the party and that minor issues should not be blown out of proportion. They also urged occupants of positions of responsibility to be mindful of their vow to serve and grow the party from strength to strength, consolidating on the dreams of the founding fathers.
The communiqué, signed by the chairman of the forum, Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, listed attendees at the meetings, including the forum’s Vice Chairman, Siminalayi Fubara (Rivers), Senator Douye Diri (Bayelsa), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Dauda Lawal (Zamfara), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), and Peter Mbah (Enugu).
