When the immune system is compromised, it becomes harder for the body to fight off infections and illnesses, including those that affect the eyes. Here are three dangerous things that could affect your eyes if you have HIV:

1. Cytomegalovirus Retinitis (CMV Retinitis): CMV retinitis is a viral infection that affects the retina, the part of the eye responsible for vision. It is one of the most common eye infections in people with HIV/AIDS, especially when their immune system is severely compromised (typically when the CD4 count falls below 50). If left untreated, CMV retinitis can lead to blindness. Symptoms may include blurry vision, blind spots, and flashes of light.

2. Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye): People with HIV are more susceptible to developing conjunctivitis, or pink eye, which causes redness, irritation, and watering of the eyes. It can be caused by viral or bacterial infections, and in people with HIV, it can become more severe or recurrent. In some cases, the infection can lead to more serious complications, like corneal damage or permanent vision impairment.

3. Kaposi’s Sarcoma (KS): Kaposi’s sarcoma is a type of cancer that commonly affects people with HIV and is associated with the human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8). When KS affects the eyes, it can cause lesions on the eyelids, conjunctiva (the membrane covering the eye), or the retina. These lesions can disrupt normal vision and lead to complications like bleeding, swelling, and even permanent vision loss.

In addition to these conditions, people with HIV may also face a higher risk of developing other eye problems, such as cataracts and glaucoma, due to medications or complications related to HIV itself. Regular eye exams and prompt treatment of any eye issues are essential for individuals living with HIV to maintain eye health and prevent further complications
