The flooding, which resulted in fatalities and the destruction of properties valued at millions of naira, also caused damage to a section of the former prison, prompting the relocation of prisoners to a new high-security facility.
According to a security insider, some inmates were moved, and there were reports of a few escaping.
During an interview with the BBC, Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, expressed his apprehension about the situation, stating, “I’m concerned, indeed, I’m greatly concerned.”
Governor Zulum also pointed out the success of the Borno Model of Rehabilitation, leading to the reformation of more than 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families in the last couple of years.
He stated, “You have to remember that the Borno State Government has implemented what we call Borno Model of Rehabilitation, which has enabled numerous insurgents to turn away from violence. In the past two years alone, over 200,000 Boko Haram members and their families have renounced their ways, and I believe this has contributed positively to the restoration of peace and stability in Borno State.”
Expressing concern about the state’s difficult security environment, Governor Zulum highlighted the severe impact of the insurgency, noting the loss of over 300,000 lives, the destruction of numerous classrooms, and hundreds of facilities.
He emphasized the importance of assistance in handling the humanitarian crisis triggered by the flood, stating that the current efforts are insufficient.
“We cannot distribute food to millions of people in just a few hours. Therefore, we have chosen to regroup and plan our actions. Our strategy is to ensure that the affected individuals are relocated to camps. Subsequently, we will deliver aid to these camps to prevent casualties due to the chaotic distribution of food and supplies,” he explained.
