There is controversy surrounding the whereabouts of Ayomide Idowu, a 200 Level Philosophy student of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, who confessed in early September to killing Christianah Idowu, his friend and 300 Level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB)......Read The Full Article>>.....Read The Full Article>>
Adeleye invited Idowu into his parents’ home in Ikorodu on August 19, killed her afterwards, buried her in a shallow grave in the compound and then faked her kidnapping to extort money out of Rita Ozobia, her stepmother.
After the Nigerian Army and FIJ collaborated to effect his capture and handover to the Nigerian police in September, he confessed to the crime. What followed was a remand in Ikoyi Prison, Lagos State.
On November 5, Seyi Omodara, the magistrate who granted the remand warrant, was absent in court when the police returned the suspect for an update on the advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
Insiders in the police would later tell FIJ that the DPP was delaying the matter and had not issued a document for the matter to be transferred to the state high court for trial. FIJ sent an email to the DPP on November 8 but they had not responded at press time.
On December 9, an Instagram page @TrueCrimeDaniel posted a claim that Adeleye had changed his story and secured freedom. This video has been watched at least 172,000 times and received over 7,000 likes.
To verify this claim, FIJ called insiders privy to the investigation, and they said they had heard the rumours but were not aware of where Adeleye was any longer.
“The police handed him over to the Ikoyi Prison, but the judiciary is slow in its dealings. The warrant doesn’t expire, so I wonder how he secured release for a murder offence,” this insider told FIJ.
On Saturday, FIJ called Rotimi Oladokun, the Public Relations Officer of the Lagos chapter of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS).
Oladokun said he was not familiar with the matter but would investigate and get back to FIJ no later than Monday.
FIJ also sent messages to Benjamin Hundeyin and Muyiwa Adejobi, spokespersons for the police at the Lagos Command and the headquarters respectively. At press time, Hundeyin had not responded, but Adejobi promised to look into the matter and respond.
