If you work out to maintain good health, then pushing your body when it is not in the right condition can cause more harm than good. Performing exercises while sick can make a person prone to injuries, prolonged recovery and worsened health issues. It is important to listen to the body and know when to take a break from rigorous exercises. Here’s a list of five medical issues when you should not hit the gym for workouts or exercises.

Medical Conditions In Which You Should Not Exercise

Headache

There are several causes that lead to headaches and common ones can be dehydration or a rise in blood pressure levels. While some headaches can be cured by doing exercises, especially those caused by stress, for the ones that are caused due to undiagnosed medical conditions like problems with the blood vessels of the head, the optic nerves, or any other body system, working out should be skipped.

Cough And Cold

Excersising when suffering from cough and cold can further deteriorate your existing conditions. As your body is already fighting the infection, working out during that time can lead to a split in energy and delay the recovery time instead of getting healed in three days. You should not exercise if you show signs or symptoms below the neck, such as congestion, a hacking cough, or an upset stomach. Even if you have a fever,  fatigue, or widespread muscle aches, skip the workout session at the gym.

Injury

If you have an injury, especially in the leg, skipping your workout is important as the body will use the energy to recover from the injury. Exercising when injured allows the body to split the energy, which will take time for recovery. After an injury, the body tends to lose strength, coordination and flexibility. This can make you feel weaker most of the time.

Disturbed Sleep

If your sleep is incomplete and disturbed, it means that the body has not recovered and it is tired. It is better to avoid exercising when you’re extremely tired as it can lead to injury, decreased performance and poor food choices. Sleep deprivation can also lower the reaction time, which can increase the risk of serious injury.

Alcohol

You should not work out after drinking alcohol can it can impair your performance, increase the risk of injury and negatively impact your health. Alcohol is a diuretic which increases urination and can lead to dehydration. Dehydration can reduce your exercise performance and slow down the reaction time, affecting and impairing your coordination.
