The three Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senators from Kebbi State say they defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC),due to ideological disconnect and leadership failures within the PDP.
The senators Adamu Aliero (Kebbi Central), Yahaya Abdullahi (Kebbi North), and Garba Maidoki (Kebbi South) announced their decision during Tuesday’s plenary session via separate letters addressed to the Senate President.
The letters were read by the Deputy Senate President, Jibrin Barau, who presided over the session.
In their messages, the lawmakers declared their departure from the PDP as a “return home,” noting that the APC, under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, offered a more promising path for service and national development.
Senator Adamu Aliero said his decision followed deep reflection, consultations, and a realistic assessment of the current socio-political landscape.
“I have made the decision to resign from the PDP and rejoin the APC — a party I helped build. This move is in response to a simple question: what is best for the people I serve?” Aliero stated.
He added that the PDP had lost touch with the aspirations of Nigerians, citing internal divisions, a lack of ideological clarity, and its failure to offer a credible roadmap for national progress.
“The APC, especially under the renewed hope agenda, has shown greater potential for transformation. My defection is about purpose, not personal gain,” he added.
Senator Yahaya Abdullahi also described his move back to the APC as a “homecoming,” saying earlier political disagreements that led to his exit from the party in 2022 had now been resolved by the current Kebbi State governor, Nasir Idris.
“I was a founding member of the APC. My return is not only natural but politically imperative, especially with the developmental strides of President Tinubu and Governor Idris,” Abdullahi said.
On his part, Senator Garba Maidoki said he was leaving the PDP due to its lingering internal crises and because the APC’s ideals aligned more with his political vision.
“When I assumed office in 2023, over 100 villages in my constituency were under siege by bandits. Thanks to recent security interventions, peace is returning. I believe I can do more for my people under the APC,” he said.
