The group, representing northern youths, urged Kyari to deliver a full-fledged, standard petrochemical refinery akin to the Dangote refinery in Lagos, rather than the controversial Port Harcourt prototype, which has faced criticism from local communities and stakeholders.

In a statement issued on Friday, signed by Alhaji Bashir Al’Amin, National Coordinator, and Engr. Gideon Yakubu, General Secretary, AYIFER stressed that the successful completion of the Kaduna refinery is vital for the hopes and economic future of northern Nigeria.

The group urged Kyari to resist any temptation to deliver a substandard facility, similar to what critics have described as a “blending plant” in Port Harcourt.

The statement highlighted concerns about the Port Harcourt refinery, citing negative feedback from host communities and Nigerians at large.

While acknowledging the potential challenges faced by the Port Harcourt facility, the group expressed confidence in Kyari’s leadership and expertise as a seasoned geologist.

AYIFER further emphasized that the Kaduna refinery is the region’s last hope for a functional industrial legacy, particularly after the decline of other major industries in the north, such as the Groundnut Pyramid in Kano, textiles in Kaduna, and PAN in Kaduna.

“We have not visited the Port Harcourt refinery since its reopening, but the comments about it, especially from the host communities and the public, have been less than encouraging,” the statement read.

“Some of these remarks have been uncharitable to Mallam Mele Kyari and even to NNPCL. This has been an embarrassment to the nation. But we have faith in him, and we trust that he will address these issues when the time is right.”

AYIFER also expressed their support for Kyari, urging him to prioritize the completion of the Kaduna refinery, as it represents the north’s industrial future.

They urged NNPCL to rehabilitate the old refinery and ensure it is delivered as a functional, world-class petrochemical facility.

The group also offered their prayers and expressed their belief that, with the right leadership, the refinery will be a source of hope and employment for northern Nigeria’s youth.

“We are solidly behind him in prayer, and we will celebrate him when our expectations are met, Insha Allah,” the statement added.
