The number includes five soldiers, the military said in a statement on Wednesday.
The military’s media wing, ISPR, said, “All 16 terrorists, including four suicide bombers, were eliminated by the security forces after a gun battle.”
The military said that the attack was “foiled by a vigilant and resolute response” from the troops.
Another 32 civilians were wounded by multiple suicide blasts and gunfire.
On Tuesday, terrorists stormed the military base in the Bannu District of the northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The attack came after sunset, when Muslims break their Ramadan fast.
A group affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.
It said that all the militants were on a suicide mission.
Violence has surged in Pakistan in recent months as the country’s security forces stepped up their offensives against Taliban militants.
According to a report by the Islamabad-based think tank Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies, the country witnessed 79 terrorist attacks last month, in which 55 civilians and 47 security personnel were killed.
Islamabad said that Islamist militants were launching attacks inside Pakistan from their hideouts in the Afghan border regions.
It urged the Afghan Taliban to take action against them, NAN reports.
