Professor Amoloye -Adebayo who is also the first female lecturer in the department of Islamic law of the university, canvassed for the position in the 274 inaugural lecture of the University of Ilorin which she delivered  at the weekend.

Titled:”The Islamic Law and The Woman’s Agency”, the Islamic Law experts, also urged Muslim women to brake barriers in male dominated world and muster the courage  to attain women scholarship in Islamic Law.

“The provisions of the Child rights acts, 2023 requires amendment to bring the Islamic Law position on early marriage within its purview .It is believed that if the idea of best interest of the child is given more prominence than the prohibition of marriages of young persons under 18 for early marriages, it will provide a religiously authentic basis for review of such marriages. Religious positions, even where undermined in official/statutory laws, would continue to be more authoritative as ‘soft laws, in the lives of adherents.

“The provisions of section 15 of the 1999 constitution, as amended, on inter- religious marriages for national integration and perspective that Muslims refuse to honour this provision should be understood as the need for Islamic law to protect the rights of Muslims women and not as an indication of lack of patriotism,” she said.
