The incident occurred on Saturday when Irobunda reportedly shot Odizuru during a dispute with local youths. According to community sources, Odizuru and other youths were playing football near Irobunda’s house, an activity that reportedly angered the elderly man. In response, Irobunda initially fired a warning shot into the air to disperse them.
Unsettled by the gunfire, the youths returned to Irobunda’s residence to question his actions. At this point, Irobunda allegedly drew his gun again and shot Odizuru in the abdomen. Odizuru later died from his injuries at a hospital.
The young man’s death sparked outrage among local youths, who attempted to lynch Irobunda before security agents intervened. The agitated crowd also tried to set his house on fire but was calmed by law enforcement.
Abia State Police Command spokesperson ASP Maureen Chinaka confirmed the incident, stating, “The police have received reports, the crime scene has been visited, and investigations are ongoing at SCID.”
